Headless Mao

A 5.5 ton, 10-foot tall metal sculpture of a Mao jacket on the median of Park Avenue in front of the Asia Society at 70th Street. The sculpture, by Chinese contemporary artist Sui Jianguo, will be on display through mid-November in conjunction with the Asia Society Museum exhibition "Art and China's Revolution."

  1. Quite a lot of public art is installed along that median isn't it.

  2. Yes, art is installed there pretty much year round. Mostly good, some bad. It's usually worth a look.

  3. There were some Robert Indiana pieces installed there at one point, right?

I like the Mao piece - kind of Richard Serra meets Jeff Koons.

  4. Mao would be turning over in his grave. He hated art and anything bougeousie.

  5. Mao hated Western Art. Not sure how he would feel about Chinese contemporary art.
