This painting is entitled "Eyes and Eggs" and is from 1983 when he was producing lots of great art. This enormous painting is nearly 10' x 8' in size and is acrylic, oil paint stick and paper collage on cotton drop cloth. Since Basquiat often painted on the floor, you can see his dirty sneaker prints directly on the canvas. The show runs until April 6th and is completely free so you have plenty of time to get over there.
There were so many great piece of art at the Independent Art Fair on 22nd Street this past weekend, but one of the my favorite pieces was presented by Mitterrand + Sanz, an art gallery located in Zurich, Switzerland. The small and very provocative artwork pictured above is constructed of blue neon tube and is by the talented Chapuisat Brothers. I didn't ask how much it was going for, but I'm sure it was snapped up right away because a lot of people seemed to take a great deal of interest in it. I'll take two of them.
A random parking lot booth on 11th Avenue. It must be kind of boring to sit in these tiny little booths all day unless you have a really good stack of the latest magazines. 
Somewhere on 11th Avenue in the 50's, you can get your oil changed, get your car inspected and get mildly scared out of your mind.
I went to a few art galleries in Chelsea in the late afternoon on Saturday and I liked the Maya Lin exhibition at PaceWildenstein. Her work has always been good and I especially enjoy her environmental work, but these were really excellent. This piece pictured above is called "2 x 4 Landscape" and brings the artist's vision to life through an architectural rendering of nature. It's made out of over 50,000 vertical two-by-four pieces of wood and resembles a wave or small hill. It rises like a wave to nearly 10 feet high at its peak and occupies a total of 1,900 square feet. Too bad it doesn't fit into my apartment. It would look really good. Some smart museum or collector with a huge exhibition space will definitely buy this piece.
