TV Party Tonight

New York City is the capital of anything goes, so when it comes to unusual behavior there isn't much that is off limits. You don't see this happen very often, but don't be surprised if you see a guy wearing earphones (better to block out the street noises) who finds a clean lamp post on 57th Street across from Bergdorf Goodman, opens it up to hack into the electricity, plugs in a old school full size television set and sets up a chair Archie Bunker style right on the sidewalk at 10PM. It's unlikely anyone will bother you, so cozy up next to a telephone booth and you can watch all your favorite shows in relative comfort. The fall weather in the city has been exceptionally nice so bust out the wide screen and get out on the street.

Window Washer's Nightmare

Here's something you don't see very often. This afternoon one of those crazy window washing devices that ferry men up and down skyscrapers came loose off the Hearst Tower located on 57th Street and 8th Avenue. According to various news reports, two window washers are currently trapped way up there on broken scaffolding near the very top of the building.

This is way scarier than the singing garbageman I saw a few months ago.

Halloween Deli

The pumpkins are out in abundance in New York City for Halloween. A typical Korean corner deli on 57th Street and 9th Avenue.

No bread in NYC

There is seriously NO BREAD in New York City. All the panic-stricken New Yorkers scooped it up in a frenzy last night.

All Books Must Go

There's a huge sale this week at the 57th Street and Park Avenue location of Borders which is totally going out of business. They filed for bankruptcy last week. Other better performing branches of Borders are staying open, but the company is struggling with the massive changes rocking the book industry and hasn't been able to meet its debts or pay publishers and landlords.

Help Us Help You

The truly awesome thing about living in New York City is you never know what you are going to get hit over the head with from one day to the next.

For example, a random heavy set Hispanic dude in his mid-thirties with an ace bandage (or a cast) on his right arm might just come up behind you while you are reading the subway map and assault you.... w/ Hammer. Then he'll flee on the subway to an unknown destination. Watch your back!

Above The Star

A view down on the Crystal Snowflake on 57th Street from the windows of Bergdorf Goodman. This is a nice view of the Bulgari and Tiffany stores that you don't see very often from this perspective. It's actually the UNICEF Snowflake and was designed by Ingo Maurer and features over 16,000 Baccarat crystals. UNICEF's marketing department does a totally crap job of promoting the snowflake because everyone knows about it cause it hangs in the middle of the city for six to eight weeks every year at the corner of one of the busiest intersections in the world, but no one has any clue that it's put up by UNICEF. Where's Audrey Hepburn when you need her?

Rainy Day

A standard rainy day in New York City. Energy levels are low today. December 1st too.

Marathon Madness

The New York City Marathon brings people to the city from all over the world. Here's a group from Japan crossing 57th Street on Saturday morning.

The Truth About Shopping

Dior is renovating their store on 57th Street for the next few months. They'll have a brand new boutique opened just in time for Christmas. Instead of putting up an ugly plywood wall to cover the construction, they came up with a brilliantly designed large handbag. It's one of the best examples I've seen of how to do something super creative with what is usually a very boring construction site.

A lot of people love shopping and I think that this article is probably one of the most informative articles I've ever read on the subject.

Waiting for a Cab

Luckily for this gentleman, it's not quite as hard to get a taxicab in the snow as it is in the rain.

Lunch Can Wait

Bags and bags of lunch await delivery. But first a quick cigarette break.

The Stylish Way to Squeegee 57th Street

Could someone please tell him that Fashion Week is over and you don't have to pose like a runway model when you squeegee the sidewalks clean. Put your back into it!

Hot Dogs for Lunch

It's a quick lunch on the go. You aren't a real New Yorker if you haven't mastered the art of eating a hot dog on a crowded sidewalk

Brooklyn Diner

The Brooklyn Diner is conveniently located on 57th Street right near Carnegie Hall, but like any great diner it isn't open 24 hours. The food is usually quite good, but it's kinda cramped in there and it is priced just a bit too high to be a place you'd ever consider going except in rare circumstances.

The best thing about the Brooklyn Diner is that the taxi cabs float by in front. It's just like The Jetsons.
