18 Miles of Books

The Strand is the largest bookstore in New York City. It's huge and I love going there. They claim that there are 18 miles of books scattered across several floors.

I don't think anyone has ever taken the time to measure how many miles of florescent lights there are hanging from the ceiling. Any guesses?

Brilliant minds think alike obviously.

I LOVE Strand! I wish I loved closer so I could spend the hours that are necessary to make a dent in the shelves of books! Here's my pic from my visit in 2006...

What I really love is the deconstructed feel - it's not so organized and clinical as the chain book stores. I love to go into a book store and just browse.

Great photo Dottie. You're so right about the Strand. There is something about browsing the aisles that is lost on the internet and why bookstores like this one are so great. There was a story on Sunday on CBS about the closing of CD stores and how browsing through the bins was half the fun of buying records. Virgin Megastore in Times Square is closing up shop soon. In a city as large as NYC there aren't many places to even buy CDs.
